Clubbed Big-headed Fly

Dorylomorpha clavifemora is a parasitoid fly in the family Pipunculidae (big-headed flies), a group characterized by the enlarged, nearly spherical head dominated by large compound eyes that provide near-panoramic vision. The species name clavifemora refers to the clubbed or enlarged femora of the legs. Pipunculid flies are specialized endoparasitoids of planthoppers and leafhoppers (Auchenorrhyncha), with females detecting and attacking host insects in vegetation. After ovipositing into the host, the fly larva develops internally, eventually killing the host. D. clavifemora has been recorded in Scandinavia and northern Europe, consistent with the geographic range implied by its records. Adults are typically small, hovering flies observed in grasslands, meadows, and woodland edges where their hemipteran hosts are abundant. The genus Dorylomorpha is distributed across the Palearctic and Nearctic regions. Accurate identification of pipunculid species requires microscopic examination of antennal, facial, and leg characters. The species has not been assessed for IUCN conservation status, reflecting the limited biological data available for many specialized parasitoid flies.
