니카라과에서 중앙아메리카를 거쳐 볼리비아까지 남아메리카 태평양 사면을 따라 분포하는 개방된 초원, 사바나, 숲 가장자리에 서식하는 작은 슬레이트 청색 씨앗 먹는 새로, 수컷은 전체적으로 어두운 슬레이트 회색 깃털과 연한 부리를 지닌다. 작은 무리를 이루어 풀 씨앗을 채집하며 숲 가장자리 근처 키 큰 풀밭에서 자주 발견된다. 많은 Sporophila 새들처럼 새장 거래를 위한 포획과 목초지 전환으로 인한 서식지 손실의 영향을 받는다.
