Nitzschia bacillum은 원통형 윤곽과 용골 위치 봉합선을 가진 작고 막대 모양의 우상형 규조류이다. 전 세계 온대 및 아열대 지역의 강, 하천, 호수의 저서 기질에 서식한다. 이 광합성 규조류는 다양한 담수 환경에서 부착성 미세조류 생물막 군집의 일부를 형성한다.

Nitzschia flexa는 속의 특징적인 외관을 부여하는 특유의 굽거나 구부러진 봉합선 계통을 가진 우상형 규조류(강 Bacillariophyceae)이다. 담수에서 기수 환경에 서식하며 저서 및 부유 조류 군집에 기여한다. 광합성 미세조류로서 수생 먹이 그물과 1차 생산에서 기초적인 역할을 한다.
