Methanococcus maripaludis는 염습지 퇴적물에서 분리된 Methanococcaceae과의 중온성 수소영양 메탄생성 고균이다. 이 종을 위한 잘 발달된 유전 도구 덕분에 메탄생성, 고균 대사, 유전자 조절 연구에 중요한 모델 생물이 되었다. 절대혐기성 조건에서 수소를 이용해 이산화탄소를 환원하여 메탄을 생성한다.

Methanococcus voltae는 Methanococcaceae과의 중온성 메탄생성 고균으로, 유전적 형질전환이 처음으로 개발된 메탄생성균 중 하나로 주목된다. 해양 퇴적물에 서식하며 수소를 전자 공여체로 이용해 이산화탄소를 환원하여 메탄을 생성한다. 모델 생물로서의 지위 덕분에 고균 세포생물학과 유전학의 기본적인 측면을 밝히는 데 핵심적인 역할을 했다.
