콜롬비아에서 볼리비아까지 안데스 산맥과 안데스 간 계곡에 서식하는 소형 우드스타 벌새로, Chaetocercus mulsant 수컷은 체중이 불과 2.5g에 불과한 가장 작은 벌새 중 하나이다. 수컷은 선명한 자주색 목 반점과 흰 배, 녹색 옆구리를 자랑한다. 해발 1,500~3,500미터의 삼림 가장자리와 정원에서 발견된다. 체구가 작음에도 공격적이고 기동성이 뛰어나며, 추운 안데스 환경에서 에너지를 보존하기 위해 밤에 동면 상태에 들어간다.
