아메리카 대륙에서 가장 화려한 색을 자랑하는 새 중 하나인 붉은 마코앵무(Ara macao)는 선명한 빨강, 노랑, 파랑 깃털과 최대 1미터에 이르는 날개 폭을 지닙니다. 멕시코에서 볼리비아에 이르는 습윤한 저지대 숲에 서식하며, 지능이 높고 최대 75년을 살 수 있는 장수 동물로 평생 짝을 이루어 생활합니다. 씨앗의 독소를 제거하기 위해 미네랄이 풍부한 흙을 섭취하는 클레이 릭까지 장거리를 이동합니다. 최소관심 종으로 분류되지만 서식지 파괴와 애완동물 거래로 인해 지역적으로 위협을 받고 있습니다.
