Desulfurococcus mucosus는 Desulfurococcaceae과에 속하는 초고온성 고균으로, 80°C 이상의 온도에서 온천과 열수 분출공 같은 고온의 무산소 환경에서 번성한다. 황을 전자 수용체로 환원하는 절대 혐기성 생물이다. 세포 표면은 종명의 유래가 된 점액 같은 S-층으로 덮여 있다.
