아프리카에서 가장 널리 분포하는 왁스빌로, 사하라 이남 아프리카가 원산지이지만 이베리아 반도, 브라질, 하와이, 여러 대서양 섬 등지에 도입되어 세계에서 가장 광범위하게 분포하는 탈출 애완조 중 하나가 되었다. 붉은 부리와 눈을 가로지르는 붉은 줄이 특징인 작고 활발한 핀치류로, 풀이 무성한 초원과 물가 주변에 서식한다. 매우 군집성이 강하며 다른 에스트릴디드류와 큰 혼성 무리를 이루는 경우가 많다.
