분홍 무릎 다리를 가진 옅은 분홍에서 회색의 홍학으로, 에콰도르에서 티에라델푸에고에 이르는 고지대 안데스 소금 호수, 연안 석호, 하구에 서식한다. 홍학 종 중 가장 추위에 강한 종으로, 아타카마 사막과 알티플라노 지역의 해발 4,000미터 이상에서도 번성한다. 특화된 구부러진 부리로 초고염분 수역에서 조류와 무척추동물을 여과 섭취하며, 개체군은 번식지와 먹이 섭취 장소 사이를 계절적으로 이동한다.

Greater Flamingo

가장 넓게 분포하는 홍학 종으로, 큰홍학은 키 1.2미터에 달하며 유럽, 아프리카, 남아시아의 염수 및 알칼리성 호수에 서식합니다. 특유의 분홍색은 특수하게 구부러진 부리로 여과 섭식하는 조류와 갑각류에 함유된 카로티노이드 색소에서 유래합니다. 대부분의 다른 종에게 유독한 고염도 호수에서 수만 마리 규모의 대규모 군집을 이루어 번식합니다. 개체군이 안정적이며 최소관심종으로 지정되어 있습니다.
