Protoperidinium claudicans는 독특한 갑옷 세포체와 신장된 후단각 가시를 가진 종속영양 해양 와편모류이다. 전 세계 온대에서 열대 해양의 연안 및 외양 수역에 서식한다. 이 포식성 원생생물은 외막 섭식 기제를 이용하여 규조류와 다른 식물플랑크톤을 먹는다.
