멕시코제비꽃귀벌새는 중형 크기로 주로 녹색 깃털을 띠며 독특한 금속성 보라빛-파란색 귀 패치와 흉부 줄무늬가 있다. 멕시코에서 중앙아메리카까지 해발 1,000~3,000m의 고지대 및 산악 숲에 서식한다. 수컷은 공격적이고 매우 소리가 많으며 화려한 비행 과시를 펼친다. 고고도에서 번식하지만 일부 개체군은 계절적 고도 이동을 한다. 멕시코 고지대 소나무-참나무 숲과 구름 숲에서 가장 흔한 벌새 중 하나다.
