Hemiselmis anomala는 해양 및 하구 환경에서 발견되는 단세포 크립토모나드 조류로, 비대칭적인 신장 모양의 세포와 유영을 위한 두 개의 불균등한 편모가 특징입니다. 피코빌린 색소를 포함하여 광합성을 수행하며 해양 및 연안 일차 생산에 역할을 합니다. 이 종과 같은 크립토모나드는 다양한 수생 서식지의 식물플랑크톤 군집에 중요한 기여자입니다.
