Found across multiple habitat types including tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, and flooded grasslands and savannas, among 10 distinct biome types spanning the Neotropic and Palearctic realms. Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.

Anabaena thermophila는 이형세포라는 특수화된 세포를 통해 질소고정이 가능한 호열성 사상성 남조류입니다. 온천과 열 영향을 받는 수역을 포함한 따뜻한 수생 환경에 적응되어 있습니다. 다른 Anabaena 종과 마찬가지로 서식지의 질소 순환에 중요한 역할을 하며, 적절한 조건에서는 녹조를 일으킬 수 있습니다.
