ニカラグアから中央アメリカを経て南アメリカの太平洋斜面に沿ってボリビアまでの開けた草原、サバンナ、林縁に生息する小型のスレートブルーの種子食の鳥で、オスは全体的に暗いスレートグレーの羽毛と淡いくちばしを持つ。小さな群れを形成して草の種子を採食し、林縁近くの背の高い草地でよく見られる。多くのSporophila種と同様に、籠鳥取引のための捕獲と牧草地への転換による生息地喪失の影響を受けている。
