世界で最も驚くべき渡り昆虫の一つで、オオカバマダラ(Danaus plexippus)は北アメリカ北部の繁殖地とメキシコの山岳森林の越冬地との間を最大 4,800 km の多世代往復移動を行います。鮮やかなオレンジと黒の翅は幼虫時に食べたトウワタから得た毒性を捕食者に警告します。1990年代以降、繁殖地の消失、農薬、気候変動により越冬個体群が 80%以上減少し、絶滅危惧種に指定されています。
