灰色の上面、白みがかった下面、黒い頬ひげで縁取られた特徴的な白い喉を持つ中型から大型のずんぐりした鳥で、ハイイロフウキンモドキはメキシコから中央アメリカを経てボリビアとアルゼンチンに至る広大な分布域の森林縁辺部、庭園、二次林に生息します。適応力が高く、熱帯ラテンアメリカ全域の郊外の公園や庭園で繁栄しています。豊かで変化に富んだ音楽的な鳴き声を発し、撹乱された新熱帯の景観でよく観察される大型の鳴禽類の一つです。
