About

Desmodus rotundus, the common vampire bat, is a unique mammal in the family Phyllostomidae and the only obligate blood-feeding (sanguivorous) bat species in the world. It is distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, ranging from northern Mexico south to Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina. Desmodus rotundus typically inhabits tropical forests, dry forests, open agricultural landscapes, and areas near human settlement, roosting in caves, hollow trees, abandoned buildings, and mines in colonies that can number in the thousands. Each night, individuals typically fly up to 15 kilometers to locate warm-blooded prey, including livestock, wild mammals, and occasionally birds or humans. A specialized saliva containing anticoagulant compounds (draculin) prevents blood from clotting during feeding. This species has significant public health implications as a vector for rabies virus transmission to livestock and, less commonly, to humans across Latin America. The species is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with populations broadly stable. Conservation perspective is complex due to its role in rabies transmission. Biological traits include an average lifespan of up to 9 years in the wild, with body lengths of approximately 7 to 9 centimeters and weights typically ranging from 19 to 57 grams.
