メキシコからアルゼンチンにかけての中央・南アメリカ熱帯林に生息する夜行性のポトウ(Nyctibius griseus)は、昼間は折れた木の切り株や枝の上でじっとして目をわずかに開け、樹皮と見分けがつかないほど完璧な保護色で天敵から身を守る。夜になると露出した止まり木から巨大な口を開けて大型昆虫を捕食する。その物悲しく不気味な鳴き声は熱帯の森の夜に響き渡る。
