最も広く分布するヒバリの仲間であるカオジロヒバリ(Eremophila alpestris)は、ヨーロッパではハマヒバリとも呼ばれ、北アメリカ・ヨーロッパ・アジア・北アフリカにわたる北極ツンドラ、高山荒原、海岸砂浜、草原など開けた裸地に生息する。オスの頭部にある小さな黒い羽毛の房が名前の由来である。ツンドラに雪が残る早春に最初に繁殖地に現れる鳥の一つで、一年を通じて地面で種子と昆虫を採食する。
