ダイオウホウズキイカ (Colossal squid)

<em>Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni</em>, the colossal squid, is the largest invertebrate on Earth by mass and belongs to the family Cranchiidae, known from deep waters of the Southern Ocean, including records from Chile. This species is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though its deep-sea distribution makes population monitoring exceptionally difficult. The colossal squid inhabits mesopelagic and bathypelagic depths in South American and Antarctic waters, where it is an active predator, likely targeting fish and other squid. Unlike the giant squid (<em>Architeuthis</em>), <em>Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni</em> possesses unique swivelling hooks on its tentacle clubs in addition to suckers, enabling it to grip large, struggling prey. Specimens recovered from sperm whale stomachs and trawl surveys indicate that adults may exceed 700 kilograms in mass, with large eyes among the largest recorded in the animal kingdom, possibly adapted to detect bioluminescence in the deep sea. Despite its enormous size, relatively few intact specimens have been studied, and fundamental aspects of its growth rate, lifespan, and reproductive biology remain uncertain. Biological traits of this species remain poorly documented in the scientific literature.
