The Collared Peccary, known scientifically as <em>Pecari tajacu</em>, is a medium-sized ungulate belonging to the family Tayassuidae, which comprises the New World peccaries. <em>Pecari tajacu</em> is readily identified by the pale, collar-like band of lighter fur that encircles the neck and shoulders, in contrast to its otherwise coarse, greyish-black body hair. The species inhabits a wide variety of environments, including tropical and subtropical forests, dry scrublands, grasslands, and desert edges, demonstrating considerable ecological adaptability. It is reported to occur in Belgium, Colombia, France, Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Collared Peccaries are social animals, typically living in small herds and using scent glands located on the rump for communication and group cohesion. They are omnivorous, consuming a variety of plant materials including cacti, roots, fruits, and occasionally small invertebrates.
