About

The Chloropid Fly (Thaumatomyia glabra) is a small fly belonging to the family Chloropidae, commonly known as frit flies or grass flies. Chloropidae is a large family of small acalyptrate flies, many of which are associated with grasses and sedges as either plant feeders or predators of grass-inhabiting aphids and other soft-bodied insects. Thaumatomyia is a genus within the subfamily Oscinellinae, and several of its species are predatory on grass-feeding root aphids as larvae, making them of potential interest as biological control agents. T. glabra is distributed across Europe and parts of Asia, where it inhabits grasslands and meadows. Adults are typically small — just a few millimetres in length — with yellow and black patterning, and they feed on nectar, pollen, and aphid honeydew. Certain Thaumatomyia species exhibit spectacular migratory swarming behaviour, forming massive aggregations on cliff faces and buildings while overwintering, a phenomenon that has attracted entomological study. The species is Not Evaluated by the IUCN. Like most invertebrates, chloropid flies receive little formal conservation attention, though their ecological roles as pollinators, aphid predators, and prey for insectivorous birds and bats make their population trends relevant to ecosystem health monitoring.
