ノドブトウミオサミオは世界で最も動きの遅い哺乳類のひとつで、中南米の熱帯雨林の樹冠に逆さまにぶら下がり、平均時速0.24kmで移動します。低い代謝率は、栄養価の乏しい葉を主食とする適応です。毛皮に生育する藻類がカモフラージュとなり、抗菌性をもつ共生菌を宿すこともあります。蛾、甲虫、菌類がナマケモノの毛皮の中に小さな生態系を形成しています。
