Tolypothrix limbataはMichaetaceae科に属する偽分枝糸状シアノバクテリアで、窒素固定のための異形細胞を持つ連糸を形成する。湿った土壌・岩石・淡水基質で生育し、栄養貧乏環境の窒素循環に寄与する。保全状況は評価されていない。

Tolypothrix rivularisは淡水の小川・川・池で見られる異形細胞含有糸状シアノバクテリアで、流水生息地の岩石や水生植物に付着する。異形細胞を通じて大気中の窒素を固定し、属の特徴である偽分枝フィラメントを形成する。温帯流水淡水生態系の栄養素循環に寄与する。
