Thiothrix annulataはThiotrichaceae科に属する糸状硫黄酸化ガンマプロテオバクテリアで、硫化物に富む水生環境で基質に付着する鞘付き連糸を形成する。還元型硫黄化合物をエネルギー源として酸化し、細胞内に元素硫黄顆粒を蓄積するため、コロニーは白色を呈する。硫黄泉・下水処理システム・高硫化物濃度の淡水流域に生息する。
