Planococcus citreusはレモンイエローの色素を持つグラム陽性球菌で、球菌では珍しい周毛性鞭毛による運動性が特徴的である。海洋沿岸環境に生息し、海水や海洋堆積物に一般的に見られる。この好気性細菌は塩分のある環境で有機物を分解することで栄養を得る。

Planococcus rifietoensisはイタリアのRifleto塩鉱山から最初に単離された運動性グラム陽性球菌である。耐塩性を持ち、適度な塩分条件で成長でき、塩分の影響を受ける陸上環境に生息する。この好気性化学有機栄養生物は塩分を含む土壌生息地で有機化合物を分解する。
