アオウミガメは最も大きなウミガメの一つです。甲羅ではなく軟骨と脂肪の緑色に由来して名付けられました。

Trachelomonas helveticaは硬く鉱化した被殻(殻状ケーシング)に包まれた単細胞ユーグレノイド藻類で、ヨーロッパおよびそれ以外の地域の淡水池・湖・緩流域で見られる。種小名はスイスでの発見に由来する。他のTranchelomonas種と同様に光合成を行い、被殻内で鞭毛を使って移動する。
