Nitrosarchaeum limnaeはThaumarchaeota門に属する淡水性アンモニア酸化古細菌で、コンスタンス湖の堆積物から分離された。化学無機独立栄養生物でアンモニアを亜硝酸塩に酸化してエネルギーを得て、淡水生態系の窒素循環に大きく貢献する。この発見はタウム古細菌のアンモニア酸化体が海洋環境に限定されないことを明らかにした。
