Euglena desesはEuglenaceae科の光合成ミドリムシ類鞭毛虫で、顕著なミドリムシ運動（代謝運動）を行う細長い円柱形の細胞体で区別されます。水たまり、溝、湿った土壌表面を含む栄養豊富な淡水環境に生息し、しばしば緑色バイオフィルムを形成します。単一の突出鞭毛で光合成を最適化するために光に向かって移動します。

Euglena gastrosteus は紡錘形の柔軟な細胞体と明るい水生環境での光合成を可能にする葉緑体を持つ淡水ミドリムシ類です。有機物に富む池、溝、緩やかに流れる淡水に生息します。すべてのミドリムシと同様に独立栄養と従属栄養を切り替えることができ、鞭毛を使って水柱を移動します。
