世界最大のペンギンであるコウテイペンギン（Aptenodytes forsteri）は体高最大1.2m、体重45kgで、地球上で最も過酷な環境の一つである南極大陸に生息しています。零下60°C以下の真冬の暗闇の中で繁殖し、雌が海上にいる間、雄が65日間足の上で育雛嚢の下に一つの卵を温め続けます。数千羽からなる群れで個体が暖かい中心部を循環するいわゆるハドリング行動は、協調的な生存戦略の傑作です。

ノドジロクロイカル

アマゾン盆地、中央アメリカ、南アメリカ北部の湿潤な低地森林に生息する大型で太いくちばしを持つ種子食の鳥で、全体的に暗いスレートグレーの羽毛と力強い淡いくちばしを持つ。名前に反してSaltator属に分類される。密な湿潤な森林内部や林縁に生息し、つがいや小さな群れで大きな種子や硬い果実を採食する。強力なくちばしで他のほとんどの鳥が割れない硬い種子を割ることができる。IUCNレッドリストで軽度懸念に指定されている。
