世界最大のペンギンであるコウテイペンギン（Aptenodytes forsteri）は体高最大1.2m、体重45kgで、地球上で最も過酷な環境の一つである南極大陸に生息しています。零下60°C以下の真冬の暗闇の中で繁殖し、雌が海上にいる間、雄が65日間足の上で育雛嚢の下に一つの卵を温め続けます。数千羽からなる群れで個体が暖かい中心部を循環するいわゆるハドリング行動は、協調的な生存戦略の傑作です。

ハシナガハチドリ

オオハシヒカリハチドリ(Heliomaster longirostris)は異常なほど長く真っすぐなくちばしを持つ大型の独特なハチドリで、雄は目の後ろに目立つ白斑を持つ鮮やかな虹色緑色の喉羽根を誇る。メキシコから中央アメリカを経てアンデス山脈東側の熱帯南アメリカまで、標高1,500mに及ぶ地域に分布する。森林縁、空き地、庭に生息し、木の頂上の露出した枝に目立つように止まる習性は、通常ホバリングしながら採食するハチドリとは異なる特徴である。
