世界最大のペンギンであるコウテイペンギン（Aptenodytes forsteri）は体高最大1.2m、体重45kgで、地球上で最も過酷な環境の一つである南極大陸に生息しています。零下60°C以下の真冬の暗闇の中で繁殖し、雌が海上にいる間、雄が65日間足の上で育雛嚢の下に一つの卵を温め続けます。数千羽からなる群れで個体が暖かい中心部を循環するいわゆるハドリング行動は、協調的な生存戦略の傑作です。

ミドリビタイヤリハチドリ

わずかに上方に反った特徴的に長い嘴を持つ中型のハチドリで、ミドリマエガオランスビルハチドリは標高1,000〜2,400メートルのコスタリカからコロンビア、エクアドルを経てボリビアに至るアンデスの湿潤な山地雲霧林の中層に生息します。長い嘴はCentropogonをはじめとする嘴の短いハチドリが届かないアンデスの釣り鐘型花の長い管状の花を探索するのに特化しています。雄は全体が輝く緑色で、雌は白い斑点のある下面を持ちます。軽度懸念種に指定されています。
