最大のシュモクザメ種であるオオシュモクザメは最大6メートルに達し、世界中の熱帯および亜熱帯の沿岸海域に生息します。T字型の特徴的な頭部(セファロフォイル)は電気受容のための感覚表面積を著しく増大させ、砂の中に潜むアカエイを卓越した精度で探知することを可能にしています。アカエイは好物の餌です。高価値のヒレと混獲死亡により個体群が劇的に減少し、絶滅危惧IA類に分類されています。
