コウテイペンギン

世界最大のペンギンであるコウテイペンギン（Aptenodytes forsteri）は体高最大1.2m、体重45kgで、地球上で最も過酷な環境の一つである南極大陸に生息しています。零下60°C以下の真冬の暗闇の中で繁殖し、雌が海上にいる間、雄が65日間足の上で育雛嚢の下に一つの卵を温め続けます。数千羽からなる群れで個体が暖かい中心部を循環するいわゆるハドリング行動は、協調的な生存戦略の傑作です。

アオサギ

最大1メートルの高さに達する大型の優美な渉禽類であるアオサギは、ヨーロッパ、アジア、アフリカ全域の湿地、川、湖、沿岸地域に生息します。忍耐強い単独の狩猟者で、長時間静止した後、稲妻のような素早いダガーのような嘴の一撃で魚、カエル、小型哺乳類を捕らえます。サギのコロニーと呼ばれる集団繁殖地で高い木に群れを作って繁殖し、時に他のコロニー性水鳥と共生します。世界的に広く分布しており、軽度懸念種です。
