Found across multiple habitat types including tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, and tropical and subtropical grasslands and savannas, among 8 distinct biome types. Desulfurococcus mucosusは、Desulfurococcaceae科に属する超好熱性古細菌で、80℃以上の温泉や熱水噴出孔などの高温無酸素環境で繁殖する。代謝において硫黄を電子受容体として還元する絶対嫌気性生物である。細胞表面は種名の由来となった粘液状のS層で覆われている。
