It was associated with open and semi-open habitats where its larval host plants, particularly species of comfrey (Symphytum), once grew. The Comfrey Ermel typically inhabited lowland environments near riverbanks, hedgerows, and disturbed ground where its herbaceous host plants thrived. The dramatic decline and eventual extinction of this species is attributed to habitat loss, agricultural intensification, and the disappearance of suitable host plant communities across its former range.
