It typically forms tufted clumps in shaded woodland habitats, particularly beneath deciduous oak and mixed hardwood forest canopies, where it tolerates low light conditions and well-drained acidic soils. Colonial oak sedge occupies grasslands, wetlands, temperate forests, and cultivated landscapes, suggesting moderate habitat breadth within its range.
