Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.

Planococcus citreusはレモンイエローの色素を持つグラム陽性球菌で、球菌では珍しい周毛性鞭毛による運動性が特徴的である。海洋沿岸環境に生息し、海水や海洋堆積物に一般的に見られる。この好気性細菌は塩分のある環境で有機物を分解することで栄養を得る。
