Found across multiple habitat types including tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests, and tropical and subtropical grasslands and savannas, among 11 distinct biome types. Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.

Methanotorris igneus はMethanococcales目の超好熱性メタン生成古細菌で、深海熱水噴出孔環境で約88°Cの温度に近い条件で繁殖する。絶対嫌気性条件下で分子水素を用いて二酸化炭素を還元してメタンを生成する。高温での触媒活性を持つ熱安定性酵素がバイオテクノロジーに関心を持たれている。
