ミミムラサキサメハチドリ属で唯一茶色が主体のハチドリで、褐色がかった銅色の上面と診断的な青紫色の耳羽をもちます。グアテマラからベネズエラ、コロンビア、ブラジルを経てボリビアまで、湿潤な森林や林縁に広く分布します。低地から標高2,000mまでの森林内部や林縁、庭園に生息し、直射日光の下では紫色の耳羽が鮮やかに輝きます。
