メキシコムラサキミミハチドリは中型で主に緑色の羽毛を持ち、独特の金属光沢のある紫青色の耳パッチと胸部の縞模様が特徴である。メキシコから中央アメリカにかけて標高1,000〜3,000mの高地および山岳林に生息する。雄は攻撃的で非常に声が多く、華やかな飛行ディスプレイを行う。高高度で繁殖するが、一部の個体群は季節的な高度移動を行う。メキシコ高地の松・オーク林および雲霧林で最も一般的なハチドリの一つである。
