最も色鮮やかなピオヌスオウムの一つで、ブルーヘッドパロット（Pionus menstruus）は緑色の体の羽毛と赤い尾下の羽毛と対照的な鮮やかなコバルトブルーの頭と首を示します。メキシコ南部から中央アメリカを経て南アメリカ北部・西部の湿潤な低地および丘陵地帯の森林に生息します。森林、森林の縁、マングローブに生息し、騒がしい群れで結実樹に移動します。多くのオウムに比べて静かで穏やかな性質から人気の飼育鳥です。
