ジンベエザメ(Rhincodon typus)は世界最大の魚類で、体長12メートル、体重20トンを超えることがあり、世界の熱帯・温暖な温帯海洋に生息します。その巨大な体にもかかわらず、プランクトン、魚卵、小魚を口を大きく開けて泳ぎながら濾過摂食する無害な種です。プランクトンの大発生を追って大規模な季節的回遊を行います。乱獲、船の衝突、フカヒレ取引により、過去75年間で個体数が約50%減少し、絶滅危惧種に指定されています。
