大西洋クロマグロ(Thunnus thynnus)は大西洋・地中海に生息する世界最大のマグロ類の一種で、体長3メートル・体重700キログラム以上に達する個体が知られる。IUCNレッドリストでは絶滅危惧(EN)に分類されており、寿司・刺身用として極めて高い市場価値を持ち、1尾が3億円以上で取引された事例もある。体温調節能力と高速遊泳能力(時速70キロ以上)を持つ、硬骨魚類の中でも異例の生理的能力を備えた種である。

地球上で最大の陸上肉食動物であるホッキョクグマは700kgを超えることがあり、カナダからロシアまでの北極海氷域全体に分布する。ワモンアザラシとヒゲアザラシを狩るために海氷に依存する高度に特化した海洋哺乳類である。広大な距離を泳ぐことができる優れた泳者でもある。脆弱種に指定されており、気候変動による急激な北極海氷の消失で個体群が深刻な圧力を受けている。
