大西洋クロマグロ(Thunnus thynnus)は大西洋・地中海に生息する世界最大のマグロ類の一種で、体長3メートル・体重700キログラム以上に達する個体が知られる。IUCNレッドリストでは絶滅危惧(EN)に分類されており、寿司・刺身用として極めて高い市場価値を持ち、1尾が3億円以上で取引された事例もある。体温調節能力と高速遊泳能力(時速70キロ以上)を持つ、硬骨魚類の中でも異例の生理的能力を備えた種である。
Bamboo bear
ジャイアントパンダ(Ailuropoda melanoleuca)は中国中部の山岳竹林に生息し、体重最大125キログラムになるクマ科の動物で、食肉目に分類されながら食事の99%を竹が占める特異な食性を持つ。偽の親指(橈側種子骨)を使って竹の茎を把握し、1日14時間もの採食時間を費やす。2016年にIUCNレッドリストで絶滅危惧から危急(VU)へ改善されており、保護繁殖プログラムと自然保護区の設置が個体数回復に貢献している。
