This species is widely distributed across Asia, Europe, North America, and South America, making it one of the most cosmopolitan mosses in the world. <em>Polytrichum commune</em> is typically found in moist to wet habitats including bogs, fens, wet heathlands, and the margins of streams and woodland ponds. It is characterized by its tall, upright gametophytes, which can reach several centimeters in height, and its distinctive star-shaped arrangement of leaves when dry.
