Found across multiple habitat types including tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical grasslands and savannas, and flooded grasslands and savannas, among 5 distinct biome types within the Afrotropic biogeographic realm. Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.

Stemonitopsis gracilis は湿潤な森林生息地の腐敗する植物材料に、優雅な中軸と繊細な毛細管構造を持つ糸状の胞子嚢を形成する変形菌である。その子実体はすべての変形菌種の中で最も優雅なものの一つである。この生物は温帯および熱帯の湿潤な森林全体に広く分布する。
