Found across multiple habitat types including tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, tropical and subtropical grasslands and savannas, and flooded grasslands and savannas, among 5 distinct biome types within the Afrotropic biogeographic realm. Populations are also found in montane and highland environments at higher elevations.

Melosira octogona は帯状面から見ると八角形の断面が見える円筒形細胞の長い連鎖を形成する糸状の中心目淡水珪藻類である。温帯地域の河川、小川、濁った淡水環境の底生および浮遊帯に生息する。この光合成珪藻類は河川性および濁った淡水生息地で一般的に見られる。
