Achlya bisexualisはサプロレグニア科に属する卵菌の一種で、淡水生息地の有機物を分解するほか、条件によっては魚類や無脊椎動物の病原体となることもある。フェロモンを介した有性生殖系は下等真核生物のステロイドホルモンシグナル伝達のモデルとして広く研究されてきた。菌糸コロニーは流れの緩い水域の死昆虫や植物残渣に素早く定着する。
