About

The Cliff Flycatcher, Hirundinea ferruginea, is a distinctive tyrant flycatcher in the family Tyrannidae found across South America, ranging from Venezuela and Colombia south through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil to Argentina. The species inhabits open, rocky terrain including cliff faces, rocky gorges, steep hillsides, and ravines from lowland foothills to over 3,000 meters in the Andes. It is characterized by its rich rufous-brown and blackish plumage, with bold rusty-orange on the wings and tail visible in flight. The Cliff Flycatcher is an aerial insectivore, capturing flying insects with agile sallies from exposed perches on cliff edges and rocky outcrops, displaying behaviors reminiscent of swallows despite being a flycatcher. It typically nests in rock crevices or under overhanging cliff ledges, constructing a cup nest of plant material. The species is usually encountered in pairs or small groups and is non-migratory across most of its range, occupying year-round territories on suitable cliff systems. The Cliff Flycatcher has a wide South American range and is assessed as Least Concern by IUCN, with populations considered stable across the many rocky highland and lowland cliff systems it occupies throughout the continent.
